The ERABAKI Group is a multi-disciplinary team of researchers. We have worked on research development and innovation tasks for the construction of Decision Support Systems (DSS). These systems are considered the better way of translation of the knowledge contained in clinical guidelines.

Since 1994, as well as the publications in the Medical Informatics area, we have developed:

  • Inference engines like EHSIS and Mairi.
  • Technological platforms for the development for of DSS and its components .
  • DSS for the diagnostic and treatment of different diseases: Diabetes, asthma, hiperammoniemia, etc..
  • The e-GuidesMed Portal with executable clinical guidelines of different diseases.

The ERABAKI Group has founded the spin-off iKude Telemed S.L.

Decision Support Systems for Web Processes Management

The DSS technology and applications have evolved significatively since the early seventies. The limited use of databases, models, GUI, and individual decision support, has been transformed into a situtation where tools are much more powerful, including the possibility of supporting complex decisions through mobile devices and the Internet. Because the application domains are so complex, software and knowledge engineering methods and techniques need to be applied in order to support the management of knowledge.

Our lines of research in this area of knowledge are:

  1. Fuzzy cognitive maps, fuzzy inference systems, genetic algorithms and neural networks based classification methods.
  2. Formal verification of processes.
  3. Concept-based search and text mining.
  4. Electronic Health Records and guidelines complementary information access.
  5. Methods and technologies for capture, elaboration, implementation and management of the knowledge contained in clinical guidelines.
  6. Executable anda browsable clinical guidelines generation using Model-driven Development Methods.
  7. DSS evaluation.

Decision Support in Evidence-Based Medicine and Telemedicine

Clinical guidelines enable best medical evidence transfer to where best practice needed. Given the failure of the traditional method of documentary transmission, Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) based on executable clinical guidelines (e-CG) are considered appropriate to transfer knowledge and information on drugs, bibliography, evidence, etc

In summary, multiple problems need to be solved: creation of quality clinical guidelines using defined methodologies, development and systematic conversion of the abundant existing knowledge into e-CG, integration of such knowledge in CDSS, and maintenance and management of knowledge and infrastructure.

Our lines of research in this area of knowledge are::

  1. Methods and technologies capable of generating platform-independent executable guidelines including the complementary information required by users
  2. Methods and technologies for build e-CG based CDSS.

Software development process improvement

Applying Information and Communication Technologies to a health system environment is a hugely complex task. In the same way, building Decision Support Systems to deal with such an important problem like asthma is also very complex, but at the same time extremely important because of its social and economic impact. Using Software Engineering techniques based on the Software Development Process Improvement is an interesting approach. These Sofware Engineering techniques have been proven to be useful in achieving high standars of quality on the development of products, and hence providing important benefits and business capacity.

Our lines of research in this area of knowledge are:

  1. Software process sistematization by Model-driven Development Methods.
  2. Decision Support to management of software processes via Web.
  3. Decision Support to the management of software development processes using guidelines.
  4. Project monitoring.
  5. Decision Support for systems engineering resources management to secure the availability of servers infrastructure.
  6. Processing and evaluating text documents using text-mining methods.
